- CommentaryAt the end of the 1860's, Böcklin was living in Florence and– inspired by the works of Sandro Botticelli – was occupied with the theme of springtime. In this painting, Böcklin varied the Fresco Flora painted in 1869 for the stairwell of the Basle Museum on Augustinergaße. However, he transferred the form of a woman floating in the picture to a landscape with a stream. Flora scatters a number of different flowers and the meadows behind her are already covered with them. The painting is remarkable in associating a stylization of a theme well-covered in poetry with a simultaneous idealization. A dramatically threatening sky and trees bent by the wind in the background contrast with the gentle motif of scattering flowers along a gently winding stream. Seeing in this a symbolic reference seems obvious; possibly the war of 1870 still played a role in the artist's iconography: the drama of the landscape in the background where centaurs might hold their fights, loses power; the language of love and virtue re-conquers the terrain.
