  • CommentaryStarting in 1933, Willi Baumeister devoted himself to the theme of sports, especially tennis. Influenced by the Surrealists, Baumeister also worked with organically functioning forms from nature or pneumatic constructs, as were to later become more pictoral in the Eidos series. In his work ›Tennis Player (In the Blue Oval)‹, Baumeister mixed sand into the paints, thus heightening, in synergy with the curved forms, the haptic and material feeling of the pictorial mindscape. He refrained, however, from providing immediate depictions of nature in favor of phantasmal spaces with exotic signs and materiality imbued with symbolism. The name-giving tennis player arises thus, not least through the associative capacity of the beholder.
